How to make two thousand dollars this January

this opportunity only comes around once per year

GM. This is Work "After" Work, the side hustle newsletter that drops knowledge like the crystal ball on New Year’s.

It’s Taco Tuesday, let’s dig in:

  • 💡  How to make $2,000 in the next month

  • 😂 Meme of the day

Before the feast: Last week I ran a poll on what two days would work best for you to read the newsletter. Tues/Thurs won so be on the lookout for those new days!

Have you always wanted to start investing in real estate, but don't have $100k lying around? Don’t worry you’re not alone…

I recently came across this company called “Arrived” -  they allow you to invest in real estate for a fraction of the cost. (Think $100 and you can own real estate.)

  • They do all the work on finding profitable properties

  • They deal with all the maintenance, upkeep, cleaning, etc.

  • They take care of all the legal jargon

All you have to do is buy shares of a home… kind of like a stock. And every quarter they’ll pay you on your investment!

It’s a great way to get exposure to real estate without having to put a lot of money down.

Even if you’re not ready right now at least subscribe to their emails that way you can see potential deals that become available! (It’s completely free)

THE POST-CHRISTMAS TASK NOBODY WANTS TO DO

The holidays were fun. People got together, decorated their homes, filled their bellies, and now don’t want to do the post-Christmas task everyone’s gotta do… take down the Christmas lights.

When you’re in the Christmas spirit, putting up the Christmas lights is fun. But after the holidays are over, it’s like paying your taxes - nobody wants to do it.

It's cold and slippery, and going outside in the cold to take down Christmas lights is like running into your ex at the grocery store...in your pajamas...while holding a gallon of ice cream.

But it has to be done. And people are starting next weekend - that’s why I’m telling you today.

So here’s how I’d go about making $2,000 in the next month taking down people’s Christmas lights.

1. Acquire Customers

It goes without saying - every business needs customers.

Back when I was younger running my snow shoveling business I'd go door-to-door asking folks if they wanted their driveway shoveled. If they said no, ok, on to the next.

Door-to-door sales is a tried and true strategy. This isn’t a side hustle you’re going to scale. It’s a seasonal grunt work gig that needs to be taken advantage of while you have the opportunity, which is about 3 weeks.

If you’re shy you can go the flyer route just know talking to people in person is way more effective. And you'll learn how to sell, get more comfortable with failure, and learn how to communicate better - all super valuable skills!

If you’re still saying “Going up to someone’s door is nerve-racking to me."

Keep these flyer pointers in mind:

  • Create a door handle flyer - they get more conversions

  • Use a simple software like Canva - it’s free

  • Don’t include the price - if they call you, they’re interested. This is when you talk price

  • Show a before and after - take a picture of a home with lights and without

  • Make it personal - let the homeowner know you live in the community and want to help out

Once you get a customer and do a great job don’t forget to sweet talk your way into setting up their lights for next year 😏

I’d take a picture of their house before you start taking all their lights off and let them know you can do the same style next year.

Who knows. It doesn't hurt to ask and if they say yes, you just got yourself a seasonal gig! 😎

The other great way to find customers is social media (but not Facebook or Instagram). Ever heard of Nextdoor?

It’s basically the neighborhood tea app. Everything that’s going on (good or bad) gets mentioned. Hop on here and let people know you’re helping out the community and taking down Christmas lights!

2. Get some help

Once you've got customers, it's now time to work smarter, not harder.

The more houses you can get done the more money you’ll make.

Hop on TaskRabbit and get someone to help you for $10-$20/hr. Tons of freelance workers will do this.

Just a quick search in my area and I found someone on TaskRabbit for $18.50/hr.

I’d schedule up all your light removals on the same day back-to-back-to-back so you can pay the least to your helper and make the most.

The math

So how are you going to make $2,000 in 4 weeks?

Work backwards.

In order to make $2,000 you need to charge the most people are willing to pay. So if that’s $100 a removal, you only need 20 customers.

$50 - 40 customers. $200 - 10 customers, and so on.

I’m willing to bet if you took a drive around your neighborhood you could find 20 houses willing to take you up on your offer - you just gotta ask!

And that’s all I had for you today folks. Get out there and make over $2,000. Prove me wrong - I’d love that 😊

As always, if you have any questions reply to this email. I’m here to help.
